The WATSoN MATLAB Application, including the MATLAB source code, compiled application, graphical user interface, scripts, configuration files, documentation, and associated materials (collectively, the “Software”), has been developed by Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi ETS (the “Institution”).
The Software has been specifically developed for the visualization, inspection, quality control, and analysis of tractometry data generated within the WATSoN (White-matter Along-Tract Statistics for Neuroimaging) project. Although primarily intended for use with the WATSoN dataset, the Software may also be applied to compatible tractometry datasets generated using equivalent processing pipelines. Validation of the Software has been performed exclusively using the WATSoN dataset.
The Software is made available under the Creative Commons Attribution – Non-Commercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0).
You are free to use, copy, redistribute, adapt, and modify the Software for any purpose, subject to the following conditions: appropriate credit must be given to the Institution and the associated publication(s); a link to the license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) must be provided; and any modifications made to the Software must be clearly indicated.
You may not use the Software, in whole or in part, for commercial purposes, including but not limited to sale, licensing, incorporation into commercial products or services, or provision of commercial analytical services, without prior written permission from the Institution.
Modified versions of the Software must be distributed under the same CC BY-NC 4.0 license (or a compatible license) and must not be presented as the original WATSoN release.
Users of the Software are requested to cite the following publication(s) in any resulting publication, presentation, thesis, preprint, or other scholarly work:

The WATSoN diffusion MRI dataset is distributed separately through OpenNeuro (https://openneuro.org) under a Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication (“CC0”). The Software covered by this license is not distributed through OpenNeuro and is governed exclusively by this CC BY-NC 4.0 license. Users who access the WATSoN dataset through OpenNeuro should refer to the corresponding OpenNeuro record for the applicable terms governing the imaging data. As of the date of this License, the dataset is released under CC0, meaning it may be freely used, copied, modified, and redistributed, including for commercial purposes, without restriction and without the need to seek permission from the Institution; this dedication applies solely to the dataset and does not extend to the Software, which remains governed exclusively by the CC BY-NC 4.0 terms set out above.
The Software is provided “AS IS”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose, compatibility with third-party datasets or software, or non-infringement.
The Institution shall not be liable for any claim, damage, loss, or other liability arising from the use of the Software or from any results obtained through its use.
Use of the Software does not imply endorsement by the Institution of any resulting research, publication, software product, commercial application, or service.
Where feasible, users should provide a link to the original repository or project website from which the Software was obtained, so that others may access the canonical release.
The Software incorporates or interfaces with software components developed by third parties.
In particular, the implementation of along-tract tractometry includes algorithms derived from:
Colby JB, Soderberg L, Lebel C, Dinov ID, Thompson PM, Sowell ER. Along-tract statistics allow for enhanced tractography analysis. NeuroImage. 2012;59(4):3227–3242. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neuroimage.2011.11.004
Copyright and intellectual property rights for these third-party components remain with their respective authors and are not transferred by this distribution. Their inclusion in the WATSoN MATLAB Application does not modify or supersede the licensing terms established by the original authors. Users are responsible for complying with any applicable third-party licenses associated with these components. Where the Institution has modified any such third-party component for integration into the Software, such modifications have been carried out in compliance with the terms and conditions of the license governing the original component, and the modified portions remain subject to that license to the extent it so requires.
The Software requires a licensed installation of MATLAB® (The MathWorks, Inc.).
MATLAB® is not distributed as part of the Software.
Users are responsible for obtaining any licenses required to run or modify the Software. The Institution provides no support for operating the Software without a valid MATLAB® license and does not endorse any method of circumventing this requirement.
Governing law and jurisdiction. This License shall be governed by and construed in accordance with Italian law. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with this License which cannot be resolved amicably shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Milan, Italy.
Severability. If any provision of this License is held to be invalid, illegal, or unenforceable, such provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
No waiver. The failure of the Institution to enforce any provision of this License at any time shall not be construed as a waiver of that provision or of any other right under this License.
